Smart TV Remote App Not Connecting? 6 Fixes to Try (2026)

Remote control apps are convenient right up until they stop connecting, and then they’re more frustrating than just using a physical remote. Whether you’re using your TV brand’s official app (Samsung SmartThings, LG ThinQ, Roku app) or a universal remote app, most connection failures come down to one of a handful of fixable causes.

    1. Confirm Both Devices Are on the Same Network

This is the #1 cause of remote app connection failures. Your phone and TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network, not just the same router if it broadcasts separate 2.4GHz/5GHz networks with different names, and not a guest network on one device.

Fix: Check the network name (SSID) on both your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and your TV’s network settings menu. They must match exactly.

    2. Restart the App, Then Restart the TV

Remote apps maintain an active connection session with your TV. A stuck session on either end is a common, easily fixed cause.

Fix: Force-close the remote app completely (not just minimize it), then restart your TV’s network connection (Settings > Network > Reset on most smart TVs, or a full power cycle). Reopen the app and let it re-scan for your TV.

    3. Check TV-Side Remote App Permissions

Most smart TVs require you to approve a new device the first time a remote app connects, and this approval can silently expire or get revoked after a TV software update.

Fix: On the TV itself, check Settings > General > External Device Manager (Samsung) or the equivalent device/app permissions menu, and confirm your phone is listed as an allowed device. Remove it and reconnect if it’s listed but not working.

    4. Update Both the App and the TV’s Software

Version mismatches between an outdated remote app and a TV’s firmware are a frequent cause of connection failures, especially after either side receives an update independently.

Fix: Update the remote app from your phone’s app store, and check for TV firmware updates under Settings > Support > Software Update (menu naming varies by brand).

    5. Disable VPN or Private DNS on Your Phone

VPN apps and private DNS settings can block the local network discovery that remote apps rely on to find your TV, even though your phone shows as “connected to Wi-Fi.”

Fix: Temporarily disable any VPN and set DNS back to automatic/default, then retry the connection. Re-enable your VPN afterward if needed — it’s the discovery process, not general internet use, that’s affected.

    6. Reset Network Settings on Your TV

If nothing else works, a full network reset on the TV clears any corrupted network configuration that basic troubleshooting can’t fix.

Fix: Go to your TV’s network settings and select Reset Network (or similar), then reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-pair the remote app from scratch.

When to Use a Universal Remote App Instead

If your TV brand’s official app consistently fails to connect after trying all the above, a universal remote app (many work via an infrared blaster on newer phones, or via the same local network protocol) can be a reliable fallback, particularly for older TV models where the manufacturer’s app may no longer receive updates.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. Why did my remote app work yesterday but not today?

Answer. This is almost always caused by a Wi-Fi network change, a TV software update that reset device permissions, or your phone reconnecting to a different network band (2.4GHz vs. 5GHz) than before.

    Q. Does my phone need Bluetooth on for the remote app to work?

Answer. Most modern smart TV remote apps use Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, for the connection. Bluetooth is only relevant if the app specifically mentions Bluetooth pairing, which is less common for TV brand apps.

    Q. Can a router firmware update break remote app connections?

Answer. Yes, router updates sometimes change network isolation settings (like AP/client isolation) that can block device-to-device discovery on the same network, which is worth checking if the issue started right after a router update.
